Etiquette and Espionage is a spin off of Gail Carriger's steam-punk world that started with, "The Parasol Protectorate." I loved the Parasol Protectorate and many of Gail's other books. The Parasol Protectorate includes: Prudence, Soulless, Heartless, Blameless, and Changeless. More on that series in another review.
This new series is focused on a younger audience. The first two books are less about love and more of a coming of age for young women learning to be themselves in a world of manners, murder, and revolving mysteries. The entire series has a steam-punk edge set in a modernized 1800s.
The first book in the series was hard for me to listen to after finishing the Parasol Protectorate. I half heartedly gave it a good but waited to finish the series until about four or six months after I started it. They are drastically different voices on a parallel story line. The second time around it was an absolute hit. While looking for new books in my wish list, I noticed that the fourth book in this series was recently released and downloaded the second book, then restarted the first book. I finished the first three books in two days.
I'm kind of a fickle reader and audible listener, just have to be in the right mood for different genres. I hop around between historical romance, fiction, sci-fi, and educational novels with no rhyme or reason to the weekly choices. Sometimes books just need the right timing.
