Like user experience designers, we work a bit with usability, but primarily UI designers are visual with a touch of front end development. Most UI designers can program using the following languages: HTML XHTML (sometimes) HTML5 JQuery JavaScript CSS Most UI Designers can also use Adobe’s Design Suite including: Dreamweaver Photoshop Illustrator Indesign I can do all of those plus PHP and a few other tools listed on my resume.
Challenge Choosing which values in a menu should be default. Ever go to a site that has a very small country set as the default value, a country that may not even have internet (or at best makes up .5% of online internet users)? Had the UI/UX Designer thought through the system configurations, you may have filled out that form slightly faster (it’s a convenience factor). Solution Most users don’t want to fill out long forms and will go to another site that will make the process easier for them if you make them fill out a ten page survey on their life history. While the default values you choose may not be right, it is better to have a value as an example that can be easily changed than to have an empty field. Additional UX Considerations: Radio buttons, text fields and drop down boxes should be set to default values that are convenient to the user. These fields should be described in a way that is quick to understand. If a field is mandatory that should be noted. When a user makes a mistake, fills out the form too long, or doesn’t choose an option that is mandatory the fields should be noted in a way that that will direct the user the the issue. *UX stands for user experience *UI stands for user interface

HTML is a standardized version of hyper text markup language. The web standards project developed in 1999 around the same time HTML 4.0 was released, followed by XHTML 1.0 in 2000. These versions where a slow development in the movement towards richer web development, but could not support the same type of applications that Flash type projects produce. Here is where HTML 5 comes in. HTML 5 was developed out of a collaborative effort of gun-ho designers and developers to structure HTML web and mobile applications that are richer, while supporting video and applications. Not all browsers support all the functionality that HTML 5 could offer. Keep in mind HTML 5 support and feature detection is constantly changing. A glimpse at features: http://fmbip.com/ http://www.w3.org/TR/html5-diff/ The doctype for HTML 4: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> Notice the prominent versioning of it.4.01. But here’s the HTML5 doctype: <!DOCTYPE html> No version number! HTML5 is the end of the idea that we can just release a new version of HTML and wait decades for people to update. From now on, the expectation is that you’re up to date–you’re using the latest browsers with the latest standards and the latest technologies. If you’re not, we’ll still display your content, but the internet is done pandering to the lowest common denominator. –Brenton Strine

I have been very blessed in my life with many good things. One is a family that truly loves me. I tell my father almost everything and in rough hours he has been there to hear me, even from great distances. He is a man of great wisdom and few words. I’ve spent many nights pouring my heart out to him and after hours of silly fretting I would wait anxiously at the other end of a cell phone connection for his words of wisdom. More often than not my father has told me simply, “honey life will go on.” And more often than not I’ve responded, “ya dad, even when you don’t want it to.” Change is hard, challenging and character building. In my short life I’ve been dealt my fair share of those tides of change. Some days the tides are with us and others they can feel fierce, but I promise if you hold out long enough the water always calms. The French have a beautiful saying for the strange ways of life and how you must go on, it’s c’est la vie, and it means such is life. I can’t tell you when or where I first heard this beautiful saying but for nearly a decade this simple phrase has been akin to a motto for finding silver linings in my life. When I am struggling or truly enjoying a time or maybe afraid of the future.. I remember c’est la vie.

This question has been nagging at me these past few weeks like I was being pecked to death by a chicken, could it be that these words are not computing with local business owners? It's like your smallest child learning how to read an can't pronounce a word, they end up creating a new word because they can't say what they are reading. No it's not a learning disability, it's an understanding of what those words actually mean and how to use it in this new age and environment of marketing. It's changed, or has it?

Every brand needs a face. A first impression. Why? So that you can relate to it. It’s what ties an inanimate object or idea to your personality and encourages buyers. Let’s not treat the buyer like an idiot though. The design is about story telling. It’s about pure content mended together with form and function. Design is all about re-engineering an idea to tell a story and that is what I do. I’m a UI designer which stands for User Interface. Yes, I do other things like user experience, social media, interactive strategy and search engine optimization but those things all are part of telling the brand story. I guess you could call me a story teller, a brand ambassador or any other silly name that doesn’t quite describe my actual day to day activities. However, I’m a creative and even in analytic tasks it shines through, so let’s just call me a designer. So we all know that designers make things pretty. I’ve been told many times, can you just “make it pop” or build me something “european and sexy.” These non-descript terms don’t really mean anything except, “I don’t know what I want, and just want you to figure it out and not bug me.” However, so much more can happen in the design process.User experience design offers the story an inside look at the customer, and builds the user interface around simply making their experience easier to navigate. In short, you want someone to get from point A to point B, they layout the roadmap and architect the structure, foundation and navigation system. User experience is less graphic and visual, than the graphic design process but the two worlds are still very much married to one another. It’s is said that a new user will land on a website page and give the site 5-30 seconds before deciding if they are going to jump ship and look for something that more closely matches their needs. They may make up their mind based on unreadable fonts, page load time, layout, aesthetics, content, function or a zillion other things but those all lead to the premise of design. The foundation of design is simply form vs. function. Form being the aesthetic appeal, meaning the look and feel of the design. Function is what moves, it is the mechanics of the design. Function for a website can be image sliders, roll over navigation, buttons, a forum, a rss feed, a form or a gallery (not that function is limited to this list). The face of a brand is not just told by good content, a pretty face, or a cool pop up. First impressions are comprehensive and need to set a mood as a fully functioning strategy. The strategy is a story. What do you want your story to say?
