Looking back

Looking back

I was thinking this afternoon about who I am. In doing this, I considered who I was and where I’ve come from. Looking back over the years, particularly ten years ago I barely recognize my past self. If I where to go back in time, I’m not sure I would recognize myself. As a child, I was a dreamer full of thoughts. Those thoughts and many of the same hopes and tastes are with me. In many ways I look the same and act the same. I’ve been gone from Iowa for over five years now. Upon my return, my friends recognize me and remember my name. I believe it is my...

Heading to Minnesota for a Quick Visit

Heading to Minnesota for a Quick Visit

It’s a beautiful day at Cool River Ranch. The weather is warm, my puppy is lively and my creative juices are flowing at work. What a day. In two days from now I’m driving to Seattle, and heading back to Minneapolis for one of my best friend’s weddings. I’m a bridesmaid. And knowing Jess, this is going to be one heck of a wedding. I’ve never been a bridesmaid before. I’ve been to a couple dozen weddings, even was an attendant once. Sadly still never been to a bachelorette party (not for the lack of invitation). Where will Sophie...

The Tides of Life

The Tides of Life

They say that once you have drunk the water, from the nile in Cairo, that you will always be coming back. Isn’t it funny how the tides of life are always moving us, in one way or another, it is just as unpredictable as the sea itself. There are so many things in life that I have always wanted to try, always wanted to see, experience, taste, touch… simply be in life. The plight of life is we never know what is coming. In the world, there are so many people-children even, left un-cared for and I’m not even referring to third-world countries. It’s the...

Inner Happiness. Warm Weather. And a Qua...

Ever just needed a change in your life, and when you got that change it still wasn’t enough? I realize happiness comes from within. Days like this remind me of a portion from the book, “The Hiding Place.” Auntie Jan was dying and the little girl in the book goes to her mom and asks if they couldn’t take Auntie somewhere she would be happy, since she wasn’t likely to be around for much longer. This Aunt was known for being a complainer. The little girl’s mother looked at her, in her usual caring way, and responded, “Dear your...

The Fastest Horse Doesn’t Always Win

The Fastest Horse Doesn’t Always W...

No, really. The fastest horse DOESN’T always win. In dressage, jumping and eventing horses and riders win on points based on if they are too fast, too slow, perfect riding, looks, and if they knock over some kind of stick the horse must jump over. This is also a great analogy for life, because many people believe the early bird get the worm, the fastest horse wins and la de da. It’s not always true. Yes, life has rules but every sport is different. Entrepreneurs have different life rules compared to corporate lawyers, labor workers and farmers. If you are a...
